LETU to Present Free Lecture on Science and the Bible

LeTourneau University will feature Gregg Davidson of Solid Rock Lectures to present a free science seminar titled "Death and Earth History: Why the Bible and Science Conflict Far Less Than People are Conditioned to Think."

The lecture will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, in the Education Building, Room 117/120 on the LETU campus at 2100 S. Mobberly Ave. in Longview. Traveling with Davidson will be Solid Rock Lectures founder Ken Wolgemuth.

The public is invited to attend this lecture that discusses the age of the earth and theological models dealing with death before the biblical story of Adam.

"Although LeTourneau University takes no official position on how and when God created the universe, we welcome input of good science without fear that it will conflict with the message of the Bible," said Dr. Steve Ball, chair of the Department of Chemistry, Physics and Math at LeTourneau University.

"Solid Rock Lectures is a ministry that is helping Christians to bring good science together with biblical faith," Ball said. "We welcome our local churches to come out and hear from these professional geologists who have a heart for Christ and for His people."

Dr. Gary DeBoer, LETU chemistry professor who schedules the science seminar series said this particular lecture is directed to a general audience and is well-suited for church groups and Sunday school classes.

"The topic of the age of the earth is oftentimes a source of conflict within the church," DeBoer said, "but this lecture will show that it does not need to be."

Davidson is a professor and department chair in Geology and Geological Engineering at the University of Mississippi. He has experience in radiocarbon dating and processing rock samples-done in the same lab that dated the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Shroud of Turn at University of Arizona, where he earned his doctorate in hydrogeology. He is the author of the book When Faith and Science Collide, and has written numerous faith and science articles in journals such as Modern Reformation and the Christian Research Journal.

Wolgemuth founded Solid Rock Lectures to communicate about the geology of the earth, primarily in seminaries and church venues. For the past decade, he has been teaching short courses in the oil industry around the world. With more than 30 years of experience as a petroleum geologist in the oil industry, Wolgemuth has published more than 20 papers and research reports.
