LeTourneau University’s School of Education will reduce the number of hours required for several education degree programs to remain competitive in response to reductions made by the state of Texas.
“These changes are not expected to have any impact on programmatic outcomes,” said LETU Dean for the School of Education Dr. Wayne Jacobs. “We feel these reductions will have a more favorable reaction to initial inspection by students who inquire about LETU degree programs in education.”
The state of Texas reduced all academic programs for education degrees to 120 hours. Nine of LETU’s teacher education degree programs and two of its kinesiology programs will be affected by the reduction, primarily those degree programs with 130 hours or more as requirements. All of the programs will maintain a current minimum of 124 hours for a Bachelor of Arts program or 126 hours for a Bachelor of Science program. Most of the reductions were made possible by reducing literature electives and history courses.
Degrees targeted for the reductions include two in the Department of Kinesiology: the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with an Exercise Science concentration will reduce from 131 hours to 126 hours and the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology for Early Childhood through 12th grade instruction will reduce from 130 to 126 hours.
Nine degrees in the Department of Teacher Education will see reductions: the Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies degree programs for grades 4-8 Language Arts/Social Studies concentration and for 4-8 Math/Science concentration will both be reduced from 131 to 128 hours.
The Bachelor of Science in Applied Technology will be reduced from 132 to 126 hours. The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with Computer Information Systems will be reduced from 136 to 130 hours. The Bachelor Science in Physical Sciences will be reduced from 132 to 129 hours. The Bachelor of Science Composite degree will be reduced from 133 to 127 hours.
The Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies will be reduced from 134 to 128 hours. The Bachelor of Arts in English/Language arts will be reduced from 130 to 127 hours. The Bachelor of Arts in History with Spanish will be reduced from 128 to 125 hours.
